Keep a close eye on appeal rights notices

Patient financial liability is not the only concern requiring inpatient notification. As a patient access manager, you also must educate your staff on the notices related to discharge appeal rights.

Effective July 1, 2007, Medicare implemented a revised process to notify hospital inpatients of their rights during a covered Medicare stay. These rights include the right to appeal a discharge decision to the quality improvement organization (QIO) if patients believe they are being discharged too soon.
